1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined cigarette case and lighter.
-An object of this inventionis to providevan improved cigaretteY case and lighter wherein the cover of the case includesJ a lighterwhich may Vbe used with the coverrinreither open or closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved lighter which is of simple construction, and which may be incorporated in the lid or cover of a cigarette case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined cigarette case and cover of this kind which is of simple construction so that it can be made at a relatively low cost.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction and operation herein stated, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a combined cigarette case and lighter constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a plan View, partly broken away and in section, of the device,
Figure 3 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of the device,
Figure 4 is a detail side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of the lighter on the flint abrader side.
Figure 5 is a detail rear elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawings the numeral I designates generally a receptacle which is designed for receiving cigarettes. The receptacle I includes opposite side walls II, a front wall I2, and a rear wall I3.
'Ihe bottom wall I4 is secured between the side and front and rear walls. The receptacle I0 has hingedly mounted onthe upper end thereof a combined closure or lighter, generally designated as I5. The combined closure and lighter I includes a housing I6 which is formed with a Wick chamber I'I. The wick chamber I'I has xed to the bottom thereof a bottom wall I8 formed with depending flanges I9 fixed to the sides and ends of the housing I6.
A spring Z is adapted to normally urge the housing I6 upwardly to open position. The front Wall 2I of the housing I6 is formed with a notch 22 on the inside thereof and a resilient locking bar 23 which is formed with a rolled upper end 2 .t 24 is adapted to engage in the notchor keeper .22. The lower end of the locking bar 23 is iixed by means of a rivet or fastening member 215 to the inner side of thev front wall I2. An operating button 26 is carried by the locking bar 23 and projects through an opening 2'I formed in the front wall I2. The chamber I7 includes a, top
wall 28 which has threaded therethrough a wickv guiding nipple 2S. l
The wick 3l? is extended through a bore of the nipple 29 and has a small portion thereof projecting above the nipple 29 and the remainder thereof disposed in the fuel chamber I'I which is adapted to be filled with cotton or the like and vsaturated with liquid fuel.
The wall 28 is disposed below the top wall 3| of the housing I6, thereby forming a wick or combustion chamber 32. A spring-pressed closure 33 is adapted to be normally disposed in closed position ov-er the wick 3@ and includes a top Wall 34 formed with a rounded forward end 35.
A cylindrical wick extinguishing member 36 is carried by the wall 34 and is adapted to engage over the wick 3l! when the closure 33 is in closed position. The closure 33 is hingedly mounted on a pintle 31 and is constantly urged to closed position by means of a spring-pressed pin 323 which is slidable in a bore 39 formed in a lug 4l) carried by the top Wall 3|. A spring 4I constantly urges the head 42 of the pin 33 against a lug or cam member 43 which projects rearwardly from the pintle 3l.
A threaded plug 44 is threaded into the rear wall 45 of the housing It, and provides a means whereby liquid fuel may be poured into the fuel chamber II.
The housing It also includes an abrading wheel 46 carried by a pin or shaft 41. The abrading wheel 46 is adapted to engage against a pyrophoric element or flint 48 disposed in an elongated bore 49 and a spring 50, which is tensioned by a screw 5I constantly holds the flint 48 against the abrading wheel 46. The wheel 46 projects outwardly of the housing I6, as shown in Figures 3 and 5 so that the abrading wheel may be engaged with a thumb or finger to rotate the same after the closure 33 has been raised to provide for lighting of the wick 3l] by a spark generated through rotation of the abrader 46.
'I'he combined closure and lighter housing I5 is hingedly secured to the case I0 by means of a hinge barrel 5Ia carried by a leaf 52 which is xed by fastening devices 53 to the case I0. The barrel 5Ia is formed with semi-cylindrical end portions 54 within which the coils of the springs `2l] engage. A pintle 55 extends through ears 56 shown on the left side of the housing l5 (Fig 3) but it will be understood that this wheel may be disposed on the opposite sideoflhousing VI5 and the associated parts may be likewise changed as to their indicated positions.
What I claim is:
A combined cigarette lighter and closure yfor a cigarette case comprising a housing having a stepped top Wall forming a depressed portion defining a combustion chamber, a fuel chamber underlying said top Wall, a wick in said fue] chamber having an end thereof extending through said depressed portion of said top wall and into said combustion chamber, said hous-Y ing including a thickened Side wall formed'with a bore extending therealong, an abrading Wheel rotatablycarried by'said housing adjacent said Wickend for rotation in `a plane parallel to said top Wall, said Wheel-confronting an end ofsaid bore and extending outwardly through said side wall, a pyrophoric element in said bore extending out of said end of the latter and engaging said Wheel, spring meansin said'bore constantly urging said pyrophoric element Vagainst said wheel, a bore in said vsteppedrtop Vwall opening through thev vertical portion thereof, a beveled edge on the mouth of said last mentioned bore,`
a cover for said combustion chamber having an end pivotally mounted on said top wall adjacent said vertical portion of the latter, a double camsurface having a projecting point to afford an over center snapaction formed on said end Y of said cover,v a spring urged headed pin in 'said second bore engaging saidcamlsurface for holding said cover'in either the open or closed posi- `tion thereof, the head of said pin being beveled "in conformity to the mouth of said bore, the end wall of' said cover opposite the stepped portion thereof having a threaded fuel opening therein,
and a threaded closure for said opening.
