Abstract

1,005,309. Gas lighters. A. RACEK. Jan. 21, 1964 [Jan. 25, 1963; Nov. 14, 1963], No. 2605/64. Heading F4F. A gas-fuelled lighter has a tank 1 rotatable relative to a flame adjuster 3, Fig. 1, a locking member preventing this relative rotation, to adjust the flame height, except when the valve 4, 7 is open. A disc 12, splined to adjuster 3, has peripheral teeth 14 which are engaged by a nose 32 on cover lever 28 when the cover is open, to hold the adjuster 3 against rotation so that rotation of tank 1 adjusts the degree by which a gas throttling layer 5 is compressed. The tank can be rotated within the limits defined by a stop 34 on the tank and a stop 15a on a ring 13 splined to adjuster 3. The valve 4, 7 is opened by a spring 10 and closed by a cap 8 on the cover engaging a plate 9 on valve stem 6. In Fig. 2, not shown, the nose engages the toothed disc to open the valve. In Fig. 4, the gas tank is fired and an adjuster 53 is held against rotation when disc 59 closes nozzle 52 by a stud 64 on leaf spring 63 engaging in one of a plurality grooves in adjuster 53. On depressing member 56 to rotate and open cover 54 through pinion and rack mechanism 57, 58, a nose 66 engages and depresses spring 63 to move stud 64 away from adjuster 53 which is rotatable between limits defined by projection 67 and spring 63. The lighter in Fig. 6, has two housing parts 71, 72 pivoted together at 70; a leaf spring 75 extends around pivot 70 and has a part 81 holding a rotatable tank in part 71, a part 79 engaged by a nose 80 on flint tube 74 in housing part 72, and a part 76 extending below a stop 77 on valve stem 78. Relative rotation of parts 71, 72 opens cover 82 through member 83, bends the spring part 79 so that part 76 engages and raises valve stem 78, and engages a nose 88 on flint tube 74 with adjuster 87 whereby rotation of the tank adjusts the flame. In Fig. 7, not shown, a rotatable gas tank is prevented from rotation on relative movement of two housing parts as in Fig. 6, by a nose on the flint tube engaging the tank and the adjuster is then rotated by a wrench extending outwardly through a slot in the housing. The lighter of Fig. 8, has a cover 102 pivoted at 101 to a housing 100 and has a pusher 103 linked to the cover. A lever 109 is pivoted to a forked arm 104 on pusher 103 and engages under a stop 110 on valve stem 111. When pusher 103 is depressed lever 109 raises the valve stem and engages a toothed adjuster 113 so that tank 115 can be rotated to adjust the flame.
