In a gaseous fuel lighter having spark ignition, the cover of the casing is formed with a part which on opening the cover engages a spring loaded carrier, axial movement of which opens the burner nozzle. In the form shown, the cover c has a projection k which engages a shoulder l on the burner nozzle carrier e when the cover is opened. The cover c is pivoted at i and may be retained in either open or closed position by a spring pressed plate o which bears alternatively on flat surfaces p, q on the cover according as this is open or closed.
