Class 75 (3) A gas fueled lighter in which a burner valve and an igniter mechanism are actuated conjointly by a manually operated finger-piece has detachably mounted in the lighter casing 1 a fuel container 2 upon the upper wall 2c of which is carried a fuel valve housing 5 in which the burner valve 6 is reciprocably mounted so as to be movable, between open and closed positions, in a path disposed above and horizontal to the fuel container 2, by means of the finger piece 7 which is mounted on the side of the casing 1 and interconnected with a friction wheel 9 and the valve 6 so as to rotate the wheel 9 and open the valve 6 when depressed. The upper end of the finger-piece 7 has a pair of spaced arms 20, 21 provided with cam surfaces 22 at their inner ends and with rack teeth 30, 31 which engage gear teeth 32 33, formed in or attached to a closure cover 35. The cam surfaces 22 bear against pivoted levers 23, 24 formed with slots 26 which engage the ends of a valve actuator rod 27. The rod 27 slides in a horizontal slot 26a formed in a frame 25 and engages a recess 28 on the valve 6 so that when the finger-piece 7 is depressed the cam surfaces 22 tilt the levers 23, 24 to open the valve 6 at the same time as the cover 35 is raised. The valve is held closed by a spring 46; a rubber disc 49 seals the orifice in a member 45. The fuel container 2, made up of telescoped sections 2a, 2b, is removed by unscrewing a flint adjusting screw 14 and removing an end plate 56 held in position by a lug 58 formed thereon and engaging a lug 57 on the container 2. The method of engagement between the rod 27 and recess 28 facilitates replacement of the container. The position of an aperture in a disc 44 with respect to an aperture in a disc 43 effects an alteration in the fuel pressure passing through the valve 6.
