Abstract
1,099,174. Valves. HONEYWELL Inc. March 21, 1966 [March 27, 1965; May 15, 1965], No. 12237/66. Heading F2V. The supply of gas to main and pilot burners 13, 14 is effected by a lift, rotary disc or as shown, a tapered plug valve 20, flow through which is controlled by a lift-type safety valve 23 seating on the smaller end of the valve 20; both valves are connected to a knob 21 capable of axial and rotary movement. The safety valve 23 is connected by a lever 26 to the armature of an electromagnet 32 which is energized by a thermocouple 33 adjacent the pilot burner 14. A bell-crank 41, which is pivoted on the same pin 30 as the lever 26, is loaded by a spring 42 and embodies a latch 41d that coacts with an indent 40 or a cam projection on a rotary part of the valve 20 or knob 21 to prevent opening the valve 20 when the safety valve 23 is open. The bell-crank 41 has a bifurcated lower limb that straddles an extension 23a of the safety valve 23 and is engaged by the lever 26. A pin (50, Fig. 9, not shown), attached to the knob 21 co-operates with a programming groove (51) on the body 11 which provides for off, pilot, high and low positions. The knob cannot be fully depressed to open the safety valve until the valve 20 has been rotated past the position in which the latch 41d would engage the indent 40 were it not held away by the lever 26. When in the pilot position the knob can be depressed fully and upon ignition of the pilot flame the safety valve is held open by the electromagnet 32 so that the knob can be allowed to retract.
