Abstract

1,163,127. Valves. HONEYWELL Inc. 30 Sept., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965], No. 43793/66. Heading F2V. Safety cut-off gas valve for main and pilot burners consists of a rotary disc valve member 18 closed by a garter spring 32 when pilot flame failure has allowed a thermocouple to cool and caused a holding solenoid 54 to be released. A spring 55 then moves a lever 51 and thence a plate 40 upwardly. This plate is slidable axially in a slot 24b in a gear 24 which meshes with tooth recesses 23 in the valve member 18. Ends 40c of a C-shaped part of the plate are released from recesses 42a in a coupling member 41 which is rotatable only with the control re-setting knob 25. To re-set the device, the knob must be forcibly turned to release it from spring detents 29a and then brought to OFF position. The knob is fast with a stem 28 which is slotted to receive the coupling member 41. This member is biased upwardly relative to the stem by a spring 47. The slot 28a in the stem is widened at 28b to engage a lower part 40a of the plate 40 and provide shoulders which can depress this plate. On re-setting the valve, the knob is depressed until the bottom of a recess 35 engages a boss 33. This disengages stops 38 and (37), Fig. 3 (not shown), from a boss 39 and engages the slotted end 28b with the plate 40. The knob is turned to a position allowing pilot flow through ports not shown. The knob can then be further depressed as boss 33 can now enter a deeper recess 35a. This engages parts 40c with recesses 42a in the coupling member 41. On lighting-up, the holding device 54 becomes effective. The knob is now turned to ON to open the main flow port 20. If the knob is returned to OFF position from the pilot position when the holding device 54 is effective, fixed cams 45, 46 depress the coupling member 41 to release it from the plate 40 and this plate has to be later returned to zero along with the valve by the garter spring 32, before the valve can again be turned ON.
