Abstract

1380568 Burner controllers ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO 14 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 50004/73 Divided out of 1380567 Heading F4T A fuel control device for a dual flow rate burner, particularly of the type forming the subject matter of Specification 1,380,567, has only a single fuel inlet 12, Fig. 6, and a single fuel outlet 14, means operative to provide fuel flow to the outlet selectively at two predetermined flow rates corresponding to the two rates of the burner which produces two different flame configurations, a flame sensor T for sensing both flame configurations, and a safety shut-off valve 18 responsive to the flame sensor so as to be maintained open as long as any flame emanates from the burner. The valve 18 has a holding solenoid 24 energized by thermocouple T but of insufficient power to open this valve. A manual control knob 48 has an OFF position, a PILOT position, and an ON position, a button 32 being depressable only in the PILOT position to open valve 18 and simultaneously close a valve 38 to block a main fuel flow path, an auxiliary fuel flow passing via a by-pass passage 74 to outlet 14. After ignition of the auxiliary flow, valve 18 remains open, unless the flame goes out, and knob 48 is turned to the ON position whereat the main fuel flow passes via valves 18, 22 and 36, 38 into and through a plug valve 42, rotated by knob 48, and thence to outlet 14 via a thermostatic valve 52, Fig. 1, the auxiliary flow continuing via passage 74 and a variable restrictor 75. The flow via passage 74 may or may not be controlled by an exterior flow channel in plug valve 42. The thermostatic valve 52 comprises a spring biased member 56 having a seat 54 and actuated by a snap-acting mechanism 64 responsive to a rod-in-tube thermostat 68 with a temperature selector 72 so that with the valve 52 closed or open the burner operates at a standby or main rate respectively.
