Abstract

A gas burner control comprises a gas governor 15 consisting of a thermally responsive device connected to an expansible unit 31 which influences the force of a spring 30 acting to open a valve 18 in a weep line 16 in the supply to a main burner, expansion of said unit 31 closing the valve 18 to effect closure of a valve 20 in the main supply to the burner, and has a flame failure device 4 to supply gas to a pilot burner and activated by a thermocouple 12 such that when the flame at the pilot burner is extinguished the device 4 shuts off the gas supply to both the main and pilot burners. Manual depression of a device 21 urges a valve member 5 of safety device 4 away from its seating 7 against the action of a spring 6 to allow gas to flow to the pilot burner. Flow to the main burner is, however, prevented by a disc 23 on the device 21 abutting the sealing 7. When the pilot has been ignited its flame acts on the thermocouple 12 to energize an electromagnet 13 which then holds the valve member 5 open and thus release of the device 21 allows gas to flow to the main burner via weep lines 16, 19 and a main line containing a diaphragm valve 20. As the temperature of the apparatus heated by the main burner rises the expansible unit 31 forces a lever 24 away from a diaphragm 34, thus relieving the pressure exerted on a block 35, which mounts the valve 18, by the spring 30 mounted on a second lever 28. Gas pressure on the diaphragm 34 is then sufficient to cause partial closing of the valve 18, causing gas to pass through a restricted orifice 37 to a chamber 39 effecting partial closure of the diaphragm valve 20. When a predetermined temperature is reached the lever 24 is held down with a "snap action" by a magnet 44, thus allowing valve 18 to fully close and a sufficient pressure to build up in chamber 39 to close valve 20. Extinction of the pilot flame deenergizes the electromagnet and valve member 5 returns to its closed position.
