Abstract
1,201,106. Valves. CONTROLS CO. OF AMERICA. 9 May, 1968 [23 June, 1967], No. 22020/68. Heading F2V. [Also in Division F4] A gas control valve assembly comprises a housing 10 having an inlet 12, a main outlet 88 and a pilot outlet 40, a safety valve 17 controlling flow to both outlets and held open by an electromagnet 36, which valve requires resetting following de-energization of the electromagnet, resetting means including a plunger 52 which is depressed from its normal position to reset the safety valve, an interrupter valve 44 carried by the plunger to block the flow to the main outlet during resetting of the safety valve, thermostatic control means 90, 72, 92, adjusting means 68 operative upon rotation of the plunger to adjust the thermostatic control means, and means 20, 30 responsive to withdrawal of the plunger from its normal position to close the safety valve regardless of the state of energization of the electromagnet, the plunger being actuatable to reset or close the safety valve in any predetermined rotary position without affecting the adjustment of the thermostatic means. If failure of the pilot burner 39 causes de-energization of the electromagnet 36, a spring 34 closes the safety valve 17 against the resistance of a weaker spring 54. Withdrawing the plunger 52 to a position in which it is retained by engagement of a spring-loaded ball 58 with a recess below a collar 60 permits a light spring 30 to close the safety valve and extinguish both the pilot and main burners. After the thermocouple of the pilot burner has ceased to energize the electromagnet, the plunger 52 is pushed downwardly to close an interrupter valve 44 and open the safety valve 17 so that only the pilot burner is ignited. The spindle 52 is now released for return to the position shown by a spring 64 and is rotated by a knob 55 to cause a cam track 68 to adjust a lever 72 and hence the temperature setting of a snap valve 80 and a modulating valve 82 controlled by a thermally-responsive bellows 90. The snap valve provides a preliminary low rate of flow to the main burner through a by-pass conduit 86. Inwardly biased latches 62, 62 prevent the safety valve 17 from being opened by downward movement of the plunger 52 before the thermocouple has cooled and allowed the electromagnet to release a plate 32 which spreads the latches to the position shown.
