Abstract

1,201,325. Burner controls. JUNKERS & CO. G.m.b.H. 17 Nov., 1967 [19 Nov., 1966], No. 52329/67. Heading F4T. A safety control device for gaseous fuel comprises within a housing 10, 11 an ignition safety valve 13, pilot burner valve 14, and main burner valve 15, each valve having a valve closure member 16, 46, 34, respectively, loaded by springs 24, 48, 36 towards valve seats 17, 47, 35, and said device also including a control knob 32 connected with a control rod 26 having rotatable therewith a sleeve 30, the knob 32 having "off", "ignition" and "open" positions corresponding to different stages of an ignition cycle, and there being within the housing a solenoid 18 provided with an electromagnet 21 adapted to be energized by a thermo-current produced by a thermo-element heated in the pilot flame. The device operates as follows assuming that it is initially in the "off" condition illustrated in Fig. 1. Gas enters the housing via inlet 101 and is retained in space 51 by valve 13 until knob 32 is pushed towards the housing and is rotated by means of a lug 42 thereon engaging a cam surface 40 on a sleeve 39 fixed to cover-plate 12. Since sleeve 30 is, by means of rod 26, attached to knob 32, it moves in and relates therewith, the inward movement of the sleeves rotating a bell-crank 27 so that an arm 29 thereof forces valve closure member 16 off its seat, and rotation of the sleeve causing a cam-surface 50 thereon to force a rod 49 upwardly thereby displacing valve closure member 46 from its seat. Gas passes via valve 13, space 52 and valve 14 to the pilot burner where it is ignited, the flame heating the thermo-element and producing a thermo-current which energizes magnet 22. Attached to valve stem 19 is an armature plate 20 which is attracted to and retained by magnet 22 after it has been lifted theretowards by crank-arm 29. The knob is now pulled from cover-plate 12 and rotated in the opposite direction, this movement causing rod 26 to pull valve closure member 34 away from its seat and allow gas to pass to the main burner to be ignited by the pilot burner. If the knob is now returned to its initial "off" position the supply of gas to the pilot and main burners is cut off since closure members 34 and 46 enter their seats. The closure member of valve 13 will however remain open during the time the thermo-element remains hot and during this time an arm 55 of the bell-crank enters a slot in sleeve 30 preventing a new ignition cycle from being started since it will not be possible to turn knob 32. Only when the thermo-element has cooled and there is no thermo-current will the armature plate be released by the magnet 22, thus causing closure member to reseat itself and rotate the bell-crank by means of arm 29. This rotation will lift bell-crank arm 55 from the slot in sleeve 30 and allow a new ignition cycle to proceed.
