Abstract

561,457. Pyrophoric lighters. SMITH, J. Nov. 17, 1942, No. 14844/41. [Class 75 (iii)] A wick cap 7 pivoted on a screw 8 carrying the friction wheel 2 of a pyrophoric lighter is directly connected by a spring 11 to an adjustable lug 12 secured to the top of the fuel reservoir in front of the wick 6 so that when the cap 7 is raised by pressure on its tip 14 the spring attachment stud 10 moves below the axis of the cap and the cap snaps into the fully open position. The friction wheel is simultaneously operated to produce sparks at the flint 3 to ignite the wick by the engagement of a pawl on the cap with a ratchet wheel attached to the friction wheel. The reservoir is wider than the wick cap and is formed with a perforated extension 5 to provide a storm cage surrounding the wick and space for the accommodation of the spring 11.
