Abstract

579,834. Electron oscillators. BARFORD, N. C. Nov. 20,1943, No. 19448. [Class 39 (i)] In electron oscillators of the kind described in Specification 528,041, the resonator 3 is of substan. tially cylindrical or frustoconical shape, of circular or other cross-section, and is tuned by providing an end wall with two portions 5a, 5b movable axially relatively to one another and disposed respectively in the regions where the electric and magnetic fields are at a maximum. The part 5b is preferably about 8 times the area of part 5a. Parts 5a, 5b may be moved in opposite directions, or in the same direction at different rates, or 5a alone may be movable. The wall may be corrugated at 6 to allow movement, or, if vacuum tightness is not essential, sliding pistons may be used. The arrow indicates the direction of the electron beam and also of the electric field lines.
