Abstract
844,623. Velocity-modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Oct. 5, 1956 [Nov. 14, 1955], No. 25773/59. Divided out of 844,621. Class 39(1). The gap spacing in a cavity resonator of a velocity-modulated discharge tube is varied around the periphery of the gap to compensate at least partially for the effect of an axialelectric component of the electromagnetic field set up in the resonator having its axis non- coincident with the axis of the electron beam and thereby to render the work done on or by an electron more uniform over the cross-section of the beam. In the arrangement shown, which is part of the tube described in Specification 844,621, the gap spacing is increased near the tuning plunger 28 by skewing the end of the upper drift tube section 12 to compensate for the shifting of the strong axial electric field to a point off the axis of the resonator 7 caused when the plunger 28 is extended into the resonator.
