Abstract

561,859. Sleeve couplings. COPPER DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, PRESTON, G. W., and TAYLOR, H. G. Jan. 25, 1943, No. 1250. [Class 38 (i)] A coupling for overhead lines having a steel core and conductive strands of copper or aluminium, consists of a single sleeve that is compressed upon both the core and the outer strands and takes the whole tensile load. In one form of joint the cores a, Fig. 1, are first enclosed in separate steel ferrules c having an external diameter equal to that of the cable b so that a sleeve d having a uniform bore can be employed. The ferrules are first compressed by dies &c. on the cores and the cable ends inserted in the sleeve, a stop e ensuring equal insertion. The sleeve d is then compressed from the ends towards the centre so that the elongation of the sleeve only causes a gap between the cable ends without damaging them. If the ferrules and sleeve are of the same material the compression of both can be effected in one operation. In a modification the sleeve d has a smaller bore d<1>, Fig. 5, at the centre to fit the core which is guided into it and prevented from splaying by a loose guide ring g. Where ferrules are used, their outer surface may be grooved to receive turned-back strands of the core. The sleeve may be of any suitable cross-section and the dies designed to give it a circular, hexagonal, or other shape.
