Abstract
365,200. Rope couplings. HIGHFIELD, J.. S., 36, Victoria Street, London. Oct. 21, 1930, Nos. 31592/30 and 1928/31. [Class 109.] Wire cables or ropes are gripped by means of a split cone 6, Fig. 3, which is also split longitudinally by a number of splits not extending the whole of its length, and has a cylindrical bore with teeth 8 progressively increasing in depth. A co-operating sleeve 11, Fig. 5, has an internal taper less than that of the cone and when it is pressed into position the segments of the cone are forced in so that the teeth bite into the cable 10. Any pull on the cable tends to force the cone farther into the sleeve. In a modification shown in Fig. 9 the external taper of the cone is the same as the internal taper of the sleeve 11 and the bore is made conical for part of its length and provided with teeth 22 progressively increasing in depth. When the cone is placed on the cable the segments are sprung out, making the external taper blunter than that of the sleeve, which, when it is forced into position presses the segments in and causes the teeth to bite into the cable. When a cable having several concentric cores requires to be connected, a cone and sleeve is used for each core.
