Abstract

340,081. Highfield, J. S. Oct. 29, 1929. Sleeve couplings.-The inner strands 5, e.g., of steel, of a cable are clamped between an externally conical member 6 and an internally conical member 8, the tension being transmitted from the latter through a distance piece 11 to a split cone 9 that surrounds the outer strands, e.g., of copper or aluminium, and fits within the conical end of the connecting sleeve 3, 4. The strands 5 are bent over the rounded end 7 of the member 6, passed in turn through a slot 13 in the member 8 and then gripped by tightening a nut 12. In a modification, the strands 5 may be divergent, lying between a roughened cone and an outer internally coned member, the cone and member being forced together by a nut. The distance piece 11 may be replaced by a series of loose interfitting conical members 20, 21, Fig. 2, the inner member 20 being split and fitting to the outer strands of the cable, and the outer member 21 being solid and abutting against the inner cone of the adjacent pair. Some of the cones 20 need not be split. For a jumper lead 22 a series of conical members 24, 25 tightened by a nut 26 may be used. The cable ends may be painted with a waterproof composition or the sleeve may be filled with oil. According to one Provisional Specification the various layers of the cable may each be secured by a clamp similar to the clamp 6, 8, the outer members of which abut against shoulders in the sleeve 4 or against one another.
