W. .J. F. SMITH AERIAL CABLE GRIP Filed Dec. 18, '1924 Patented Sept. 21, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AERIAL-CABLE GRIP.
Application filed December 18, 1924; Serial No. 756,804, and in Australia September 22, 1924.
This invention relates to an improved clip for gripping aerial cables and has for its object the provision of simple and efficient means for gripping cables so as to disperse with the splicing of the cable.
The invention consists of a double headed metal casting or forging of dumb bell or similar section, or of pressed metal half sections screwed or otherwise attached to gether, the length of the grip block being about the same as the height and the diameter of the heads about two thirds of the length, the dimensions however being varied according to requirements. The heads of the casting or forging are bored with holes tapering from the ends in opposite. directions; and when pressed metal sections are used the holes are formed in the pressed metal, between the tapered holes and connecting with same is a vertical slot forming an aperture through the length of the block and through which the cable may be passed. Into each hole are fitted tapered plugs made in two halves and having a rifled hole through the centre extending from end to end for gripping the cable.
In order that my invention may be clear-- ly understood reference is now made to the.
accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a section through the casting at one end. Fig. 2 is a similar View through the casting at the opposite end.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casting, and
Figs. I and 5 are perspective views of the tapered plugs.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a tapered plug.
Fig. 7 is a cross section of a tapered plug at the larger end.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation view of the clip complete showing the cable gripped.
Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a pole showing a cable attached to insulators and the manner of applying the grip block.
Fig. 10 is a plan View of the same.
The reference letters indicate like parts in all ofthe figures. V
A represents a metal casting or forging formed integrally with heads A, the heads being provided with tapered holes B tapering from the ends of the castin in opposite directions while a vertical slot is arranged between the tapered holes so that the cable may be passed back and forth through the slot.
I) represents tapered plugs which fit into the tapered holes of the casting and these are made. in two halves provided with cen-, tral holes which are rifled for gripping the cable. 7
In using the invention the cable is passed through the rifled holes of the plugs and the latter driven tightly into the tapered holes of the grip block or forging when the tapered plugs will grip the cable and hold it firmly. v
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an aerial cable grip, a grip block formed in a single piece and of a dumb bell shape in cross section provided with holes tapering from the ends of the same and in opposite directions and with a vertical slot H connecting the two tapered holes to permit of a cable passing from one hole to the other and exteriorly tapered and interiorly bored, cable gripping plugs each formed in two complemental sections and adapted to be driven tightly into the holes to ensure of an effective anchoring of the cable.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM JOSEPH FRANCIS SMITH.
