ROPE socKnT.
Application filed March14, 1921. Serial No. 452,063.
State of California, have invented new and4 useful Improvements in Rope Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
ln an application for patent entitled Rope sockets filed by me in the United States Patent Oflice September 13, 1920, bearing Serial Number 409,754, I have shown and described a means for securing a rope socket to a wire cable end, which may be quickly and conveniently detached therefrom when desired. In this construction a plurality of cone slips which are eX- teriorly conical in formation, are employed, and are adapted to be clamped around the cable end by being forced into a conical bore in one of the socket members. This construction is in every respect satisfactory employed and the strain tending to pull the i cable through the cone slips is very great.
The object of my present invention is to increase the holding power of the vcone slips On the cable by removing from that part of the cable end which is grasped between the cone slips, the core, and inserting in its place a non-pliable core of steel or other suitable material, thereby insuring a rmer grip on the cable.
Other objects of my invention will be disclosed in the following description, will be pointed outin the claims, and will be embodied in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a Arope socket illustrating my invention as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a transverse'section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention the cable 10 is first prepared by removing a portion of the soft core 11 from its end and inserting in its place a hard core 12 composed of steel or other suitable material, said core 12 being preferably of a slightly greater diameter than the core 11 and tapered outwardly towa'rd its free end as at 13.' Theoutwardly extending' end of the core 12 is bound together at `15, in orderthat'said core will be effectively held-in'- place in the.
cable end. I f The elements comprising the rope socket are of substantiallythe same construction,
and perform the same function as those recited in my above mentioned application v for patent, and consist of the socket body 16 which is provided with the centrally ydiss posed tapering bore 17, the contractedk end of which communicates with the bore 18 through which the vcable passes. A threaded bore 19 located at the lower end of socket body 16 is adapted to receive the threaded end 2O of the subjoint member 21 and said end is lprovided with a depression 22 into which the end of the cable is adapted to project when all of the members are assembled.
In assembling the various elements` the cable end may be passed downwardly through bore 18 of member 16 below the lower end of the same, thefcone slip members 23 are then placed around said cable end and inserted into the conical socket 17. The semicircular inner surface of the lower ends of the cone slips 23 are flared outwardly and downwardly as shown at'24 v by the solid core member 12 it cannot be compressed out of-shape and lconsequently the cone slips. are caused to firmly grip said cable end. v
As an additional safeguard against the cable end slipping through ythe cone 'slipsthe tapered enlargement is provided on said cable end and core member 13.
What I claimy is: f
1. A rope construction, comprising a steel cable having a flexible core extending a portion of its length, and a hard non-compressible core mounted therein and extending the remainingvportion of its. length, whereby to provide a'cable having flexibility and non-compressibility.
2. A rope construction, comprising a steel` Cable provided with a core, a portion of said core being flexible (ind the remaining portion being non-compressible, the non-coinpressible portion being located :it one end of said cable, whereby to attain flexibility in the major portion of the cable and nonoompressibility in the minor portion thereof.
' 3. A rope construction, comprising a steel Cable provided With a Core, a. portion of: said core being flexible and the remaining portion being non-eompressible, the non-Coin pressible portion being located at one end of said Cablej the extreme outer end of the non-Compressible core being enlarged,
whereby to expand the extreme end of the cable.
In Witness that l claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name 'this 28th day of February, 1921.
