Abstract

703,674. Conductors; sleeve couplings. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 2, 1953 [Jan. 3, 1952], No. 259/52. Classes 36 and 38 (1) An overhead high-voltage transmission line includes at least one conductor formed by longitudinally bending a metal strip to form a hollow member having a smooth outer surface free from sharp edges or bends which constitutes the outer surface of the conductor. The metal strip may be formed of at least two different metals bonded together, the outer layer 4 having a high conductivity (e.g. aluminium) and the inner layer 3 high tensile strength (e.g. steel). The longitudinal edges of the strip may be joined to form a tubular conductor, or may be curled inwardly (Fig. 3). To join two lengths, internally coned sleeves 6 are passed over the exposed ends of steel tubes 3 and frusto-conical plugs 7 are inserted in the ends of the tubes. The sleeves 6 have oppositely-directed external screw threads and are drawn together by a double nut 8 which is secured by lock nuts 9. Spring 11 holds plugs 7 firmly in the tubes 3. The aluminium tubes 4 are connected by a loop 10 of aluminium wire welded thereto.
