A cable or rope clamp of substantially elliptical cross-sectional shape has a wall thickness that varies uniformly from a maximum at the minor axis to a minimum at the major axis in accordance with the formula:- where t=wall thickness of the sleeve in millimetres on the major axis; and D=wire or cable diameter in millimetres. As illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown) the minimum thickness is t and the maximum thickness is T. There is an initial clearance c between the two cable lengths and the clamp. In Fig. 1 the internal bore is substantially elliptical and in Fig. 11 (not shown) the internal bore is of figure-eight shape. The clamp may have:-(a) a notch or notches in either or both ends; (to) one or more radial inspection holes; (c) flattened portions on the sides parallel to the major axis; and (d) either or both ends externally chamfered or rounded. If the cable or rope is doubled back on itself to form an eye, one end of the rope may terminate at the clamp end remote from the eye and the clamp deformed so as to extend beyond said end and so permit the clamp to be more readily deformed to a conical shape at said end. Both ends of the clamp may be deformed to conical shape. It is stated that the dimensions of the clamp are such that it may be made of steel or other high strength material since very little work hardening takes place when compressing the clamp onto the rope or cable.
