Abstract

644,531. Splicing ropes. AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO., Inc. June 3, 1948, No. 15011. Convention date, Feb. 10. [Class 109] A splice for two rope ends comprises a laid inner portion of the same diameter as the rope ends composed partly of strands of one rope end and partly of strands of the other rope end, an outer portion composed of strands lying in the valleys of the inner portion also composed partly of strands of one rope end and partly of strands of the other rope end, together with securing means forcing' the outer strands into the valleys for part of their length. In a preferred method of making the splice, the rope ends C, D, are preliminarily prepared, as shown in. Fig. 1, by applying a ferrule 14 to each rope end, seizing each rope end at 15 at a suitable distance, enlarging alternate strands 16, 18 and 20 from the core and leaving alternate strands 17, 19 and 21 in place around the core, seizing each inner stranded portion at a point midway between the end of the rope and the seizing 15, and finally cutting the core 23 of each rope end at this second seizing. The rope ends are then " married," as shown in Fig. 2, by butting the core ends, and passing strands 17d, 19d and 21d, into the spaces between strands 17c, 19c, and 21c. The seizing being removed, the strands 17, 19 and 21 are laid around the core of the opposite rope end in the grooves resulting from the removal of strands 16, 18 and 20. The strands 16, 18 and 20 in each case are now laid around the inner rope following the valleys thereof, the strands of one rope end alternating with the strands of the other rope end, as shown in Fig. 4. Finally, the ferrules 15 are compressed around the regions including the cut strand ends. The splice may be used with rope ends having an odd number of strands. The ropes C and D may be two separate ropes to be joined or may be the ends of the same rope, particularly when making grommets intended for slings. The splice is intended particularly for wire ropes.
