Abstract

554,351. Sleeve couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd. CONNING, J., and CAIN, T. March 3, 1942, No. 2821. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] The end of a stranded conductor is prepared for coupling by placing over it a closely fitting tube and then expanding the conductor therein by driving a pin or tube between the strands. The insulation 3 is stripped back and the lead sheath 2 enclosing the strands 1 of a pressure filled cable is cut back so that a copper tube 5 of thickness equal to that of the sheath can be placed over the strands which are then expanded by driving in an annular wedge 6. A collar 4 is placed on the prepared end and the coupling 8 is put in position and compressed. In order that the exterior of the coupling shall be of uniform diameter the deformation is confined to areas 9 between which are zones 11, 12 equal in diameter to the collars 4. The areas 9 are covered by split sleeves 14, and the spaces between the collars 4 and coupling 8 are filled with lead or lead alloy 10.
