Abstract

749,649. Sleeve couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 3, 1954 [Sept. 4, 1953], No. 24501/53. Class 38 (1). A joint between two stranded conductors is made by cutting back the outermost layer of wires 2, inserting a ferrule 3 of high conductivity metal (e.g. copper) in the recess thus formed, and surrounding the ferrule 3 by another ferrule 4 of high mechanical strength (e.g. beryllium or cadmium copper). The spaces in the inner and outer ferrules are filled with solder and ferrule 4 is terminated by a tapered layer of solder 5 wired on to conductors 2. The ferrule 4 may alternatively itself have tapered ends. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the conductors inside the inner ferrule are cut back to different lengths and opened out, solder being again used to fill the spaces. The ferrules may be tubes split longitudinally either once or twice, or may be tubes with an aperture to permit the entry of solder, or the outer ferrule may be formed of a thin metal sheet bent round the inner ferrule, a gap being left between the ends for the solder.
