Abstract

731,308. Cable joints; electrostatic screens for couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1954 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 2225/53. Class 38(1). In a joint between a pair of three-cored cables 1 wherein the joints between the individual cores 2 comprise ferrules 7 surrounded by insulating sleeves 9, said joints are separated by a screen 14 in the form of a three-armed star, each arm of which lies between a pair of cores. The screen comprises two strips of metal each bent through 60 degrees along its centre line and placed together so that one arm 15 is formed by two thicknesses of metal and the other parts of the strips project oppositely at 120 degrees to form the other arms 16, 17. The strips are held in position by bindings 18 and are connected to the cable sheaths 6 by strips 23, to which the metallized paper screens 5 of the cores are also connected by wires 20. A tubular casing 11 surrounds the joint and is filled with insulating material.
