Abstract

775,557. Sleeve couplings cable couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 25, 1954 [Aug. 26, 1953], No. 23581/53. Class 38 (1). Two stranded oil-filled conductors are joined by removing part of the helical tapes 3 forming the oil duct from one end of each conductor and stripping back the insulation 1, inserting an externally-received hollow mandrel 4 partly into each conductor, and crimping three rings 5 of the shape shown in Fig. 1A on to the conductors so that the inner surfaces of the rings become convex and their outer surfaces lie flush with the parts of the conductors not compressed. The three separate rings may alternatively be replaced by one shaped as shown in Fig. 2A. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the mandrel is provided with only one recess and either one ring shaped as in Fig. 2A or a ring with a smooth outer surface (Fig. 4A, not shown) is used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 688,708.
