Abstract

883,197. Cable and sleeve couplings. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. April 4, 1960 [Aug. 6, 1959], No. 26849/59. Class 38 (1). Two conductors placed side-by-side in a metallic yoke 5 are compressed together and electrically connected by forcing a tapered pin 26, Fig. 6, through holes 12 in the arms of the yoke and between one conductor 13 and a bridging member 10 which bears against the inturned ends 8 of the yoke. The pin has a recess 27 to receive a spigot 28, Fig. 9, on an untapered pin 29 which is then forced through holes 12 to exert the final compression. The strands 13 of one conductor may be spread over the surface of the other conductor 2 and covered by a metal packing piece 15, or the strands may be formed into one or two bunches 39, Fig. 22, and held in a metal tag 37 folded to provide several thicknesses of metal alongside each bunch, e.g. as in Fig. 24. A straight joint between two end-to-end cables or cable cores may be made by enveloping the ends in a metal sleeve 41, Fig. 25, or a tube of metallic braid, which constitutes the second conductor, and compressing the sleeve on to the ends of the cables by means of yokes 42 and locking pins 29. The arms of the yoke may be bent inwardly and downwardly at their ends to form hooks for engagement with grooves in a corresponding bridging member.
