Abstract

753,985. Wire terminals; sleeve couplings; cable clamps. SALVI, A., and TORRE, M. T. S., [trading as SALVI & C. GIA I. F. I., A.]. Jan. 15, 1954 [Jan. 16, 1953], No. 1288/54. Classes 36 and 38 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A connecting sleeve 1 for bimetallic conductors, e.g. conductors having a steel core and an aluminium mantel, has a uniform bore 2 and an extension 4 for attaching a branching lug 5 provided with a similar extension 6. The end of the sleeve for receiving a steel anchoring eye (Fig. 5) is provided with a polygonal seat 3 for accommodating the polygonal portion 10 of the eye. The eye consists of a smooth stem 7 provided with a bore 8 for receiving the core of the conductor, a solid corrugated portion 9 followed by the polygonal portion 10, a circular plate 11 and an eye 12. A button for attachment to double socket elements for anchoring main bars for sub-stations may take the place of the eye 12 (Fig. 9, not shown). In assembling, the sleeve is fitted on to the conductor, then, after the steel core has been inserted in the bore 8 of the steel eye, the sleeve is slid over the eye until the seat 3 fits into the polygonal portion 10 of the eye whereupon the sleeve is compressed on the eye by means of a hexagonal die, as shown in Fig. 15. For joining bimetallic conductors together, an aluminium sleeve 14 (Fig. 10) is used in conjunction with a steel jointing sleeve 16 (Fig. 11). The steel cores of the two conductors are inserted into the steel sleeve 16 which is compressed and then inserted into the aluminium sleeve 14. Finally the sleeve 14 is compressed to lock the sleeves together. An aluminium connecting sleeve 18 (Fig. 12) for connecting a monometallic conductor to an anchoring element is provided with a bore portion 19 for receiving the whole of the conductor, a reduced portion 20 for receiving the conductor less one or more layers of wire and a bore portion 21 for receiving the steel eye (Fig. 13) which has a solid corrugated stem 22 terminating in a cylindrical end 23. The sleeve also has a polygonal portion 24 for receiving the polygonal portion 25 on the eye. The compression of the sleeve on to the conductor and the steel eye is effected as hitherto by a hexagonal die. A sleeve for joining monometallic conductors together is provided with two aligned bores 28 (Fig. 14) connected by a central bore 29 of reduced diameter for receiving end portions of said conductors deprived of one or more outer covering layers.
