Abstract

1,112,282. Sleeve couplings; cable terminations. AMP Inc. 27 June, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 28686/66. Heading H2E. The stress-bearing steel core S of cable C is inserted into one end of aluminium ferrule 2 so that it engages the serrated section 18 of jaws 6, which are urged against tapered seat 16 by spring 8 until this is overcome by the force exerted in insertion. When the inserting force is relaxed the jaws 6, which had opened during insertion, close, and a pull on cable C causes them to tighten further. The outer aluminium strands of cable C are enclosed in the outer parts of ferrule 2, and a good electrical connection is established between them and it by crimping at 20, which tightens the engagement of the jaws 6 with core S. The Figure shows a connector used to join two cables C, but similar connectors may be used for dead ends &c. Similar connectors may be used for combinations of conductive and stressbearing wires other than aluminium and steel. Until the connector is used, components 4, 6 and 8 are retained in ferrule 2 by constrictions 10.
