In a method of attaching a metal fitting to a tube 1 of resin-bonded glass fibre, a metal plug 3 is inserted into the tube and a sleeve 6 of malleable metal forming the fitting or a part thereof is placed over the end of the tube and thereafter a compressive force is applied to the exterior of the sleeve to deform the sleeve and that part of the tube within the sleeve so that the tube is gripped between the sleeve and the plug. As shown, the plug has a head portion 5 formed with a screw thread 11 or which is knurled or otherwise roughened. The tool for compressing the sleeve includes dies having parallel pressure faces which co-operate with the tapered part 10 of the sleeve to ensure that the compressive force exerted by the sleeve decreases gradually from the head 5 to a free end of the sleeve. Alternatively, the dies have inclined pressure faces and the sleeve has a uniform wall thickness. The sleeve may be compressed to a hexagonal shape in cross-section. Two tubes may be connected by a single plug and an external sleeve having an outer surface which tapers from the middle of the sleeve to each end thereof. In a modification, fitting is formed with a deep annular recess for reception of the end of the tube. Specifications 816,926 and 902,197 are referred to.
