A hose end 1, with or without bared reinforcement 3, is gripped between a ferrule 7 and a spigot 5 which has intermediate of its ends an initially internally tapered wall portion 17 and which when expanded, as by a mandrel, is provided with a bore of uniform cross-section and interlocked with the ferrule. There may be an annular groove 11, in a head 18 of the ferrule, the walls of which, when the spigot is expanded, close together to form a conical interlocking region 12, Fig. 3, that co-operates with the initially cylindrical portion 10 of the spigot wall to prevent relative axial movement of the parts. The groove and an annular recess 9 of the ferrule serve to receive material of the hose. In modifications, (1) metal reinforcement of the hose is bared and gripped between the tapered aperture of the ferrule head, and provided with grooves, and a roughened co-operating portion of the spigot, Figs. 9, 12 (not shown), (2) the spigot is threadedly engaged internally of the ferrule, expansion of the spigot causing distortion of the threads to interlock the parts, Fig. 16 (not shown), and (3) the spigot has a roughened wall portion which is expanded into mating engagement with a tapered aperture of the ferrule head, Fig. 19 (not shown). Either or both the spigot and ferrule may be provided with annular ridges 6, 8 which become embedded in the hose, and the spigot may have a swivel nut 15 or an integral threaded nipple. The nut or spigot may be used as part of the means for expanding the spigot. Specification 661,268 is referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
