Abstract
538,617. Steam' superheaters. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd. (Campagnie des Surchaurfeurs.). Feb. 7, 1940, Nos. 2367 and 8628. [Class 123 (iii)] To maintain the super-heated steam supply to the engine of a locomotive at constant temperature, the super-heater is designed to give a pre-determined minimum steam temperature when the locomotive is running under conditions least favourable to super-heating, and under other conditions, part of the steam in the superheated steam pipe 3a, Fig. 1, is directed by a valve 5 through a de-super-heater 15 in the boiler water and then returned and mixed with the other part of the steam from the steam pipe before passing to the engine valve chest. The valve comprises a member 25, Fig. 4, having spaced arms 29, 30 and rotated by a thermostat 31 in the path of the mixed steam. The arm 30 closes the entrance 13 to the pipe 15 leading to the de-super-heater and allows all the steam to flow from the pipe 3a through the valve and an annular space 11 around a sleeve 6 to the engine supply pipe 12. The arm 29 directs part of the steam into the de-super-heater from which it returns through a pipe 16. -The de-super-heater steam may be sprayed into the super-heater steam. In further modifications, the steam is de-super-heated by a heat exchanger between pipes 3a and 12. Boiler water is circulated through the de-super-heater and either the water or steam flow through the heat exchanger is regulated to control the final super-heat.
