Class 123 (iii) In a steam &c. boiler with primary and secondary superheaters 3, 5, Fig. 1, the steam temperature is regulated by an intermediate desuperheater 4 into which condensate is sprayed at 18 through a pipe 16 from, a condenser 8 fitted in the boiler steam-and-water drum 1, said condenser comprising a vessel open at its upper end and locating a coil 9 having cooling water inlet and outlet pipes 11, 10 leading from and to the feedwater supply pipe 13 of the usual economiser 7. The pipe 16 and/or pipe 10 may be provided with valves 17, 19 respectively controlled by a thermostat 20 in the superheater outlet header 6 or pipe 21, and the pipe 13 is fitted with a throttle disc 14 between its junctions with the pipes 10, 11. Fig. 2 shows a combined condenser and desuperheater 8<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> separated by a division plate 25. The condenser 8<SP>1</SP>, with a saturated steam inlet 2<SP>1</SP>, comprises U-shaped tubes 9 mounted on a plate 24 which is spaced from the plate 25 to form a chamber divided into compartments communicating respectively with the cooling water pipes 10, 11 and is provided with a spray pipe 18 projecting through the plate 25 into the desuperheater 4<SP>1</SP> which has steam inlets and outlets 3<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP>, leading from and to the primary and secondary superheaters respectively, and houses packing 26 in the form of balls opposite the spray nozzle 18. In a modification the condenser comprises opposed headers, one with a steam inlet and the other a condensate outlet, connected by a bank of gilled tubes which is located in the combustion air duct and serves to heat said air.
