Abstract

843,661. Regulating steam temperature in boilers. WALTHER & CIE A.G. Sept. 10, 1957 [Sept. 21, 1956], No. 28516/57. Class 123(3) In a forced-flow, once-through boiler feedwater is supplied by a pump 6 through preheaters 7, 8, 9 to a heat exchanger 10 wherein it comes into indirect contact with steam returning to the boiler through a line 16<SP>1</SP> from the first stage of a turbine for reheating in a reheater 17. The water is partially evaporated in the heat exchanger and flows therefrom through a final evaporator 15 and a superheater 12 to the turbine. The flow of feedwater through the heat exchanger is not controlled and hence depends on boiler load, the amount of attemperation of the steam to be reheated thus being automatically related to load. A by-pass controlled by a valve 14 is provided, however, for fine adjustment of reheat temperature. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the heat exchanger consists of a series of pipes 23 connected between headers 20, 21 which are also connected by the by-pass 22 containing the valve 14. Within each pipe 23 is a coaxial pipe carrying the attemperating feedwater flow. Shut-off valves 24...26 are provided to enable each pipe 23 to be removed for cleaning or replacement without unduly affecting the operation of the unit. In another form, the heat exchanger consists of an upright casing through which the feedwater flows and which contains a bank of nested U-tubes for the steam flow.
