[Class 123 (iii)] To compensate for differences in firing &c. across a boiler two superheaters arranged side by side and operating in parallel are divided into primary and secondary sections 5, 6, and 11, 12, connected in series with the secondary section of each pair disposed at the opposite side of the boiler from the primary section. A desuperheater 25, 26 of the type comprising inverted U-tubes submerged in water supplied from the bottom boiler drum is provided in a byepassed path between the two sections of each superheater, and valves 27, 29 and 28, 30, controlling the proportions of steam passing direct to the secondary sections and through the desuperheaters are regulated by thermostats 31, 32, at the superheated steam outlets. The desuperheaters are connected by water and steam pipes with the water and steam spaces of the upper boiler drum 13 so that water continually circulates from the lower to the upper drum through the desuperheater. The water pipe connection with the upper drum may be arranged in the desuperheater at a point above the boiler water level but below the desuperheater working level so that circulation ceases when the desuperheater is not working and its water level falls.
