520,218. Reciprocating pumps for liquids and fluids. WEBB, A. B. May 26, 1939, No. 15695. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] A reciprocating pump for liquids or fluids is provided with an inlet valve in the form of a hollow cylinder or sleeve A<SP>2</SP> closelv fitting in the pump chamber B<SP>1</SP> and free to slide across an inlet port C, the valve being actuated by a push rod F or other gear operated from the pump shaft so that, during the suction stroke of the pump piston J, the port C is opened by the sleeve A<SP>2</SP> and then closed bv movement of the valve against a valve seat D of the pump chamber, and, during the pressure stroke of the pump piston, the valve is expanded in the pump chamber and held against the seat by the liquid or fluid pressure whilst the liquid or fluid is delivered through an outlet valve K. The wall of the valve is made thin so as to be elastic, and of such dimensions as to pass over the piston J. One or more lateral arms E on the sleeve A<SP>2</SP> may be attached to one or more rods F either rigidly or with some play, and such arms may be relatively thin so as to be elastic. In a modification, the portion of the sleeve that remains in the port C is thickened, and a separate guiding member is provided for the valve.
