481,270. Diaphragm pumps and compressors. CARETTA, E. Oct. 7, 1937, No. 27276. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1936. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] In a diaphragm pump for pumping fluids, the diaphragm 2, Fig. 2, is exposed on its upper surface to an alternating fluid pressure through a pipe connection 15 to a distant diaphragm pump. The lower side of the diaphragm communicates with a suction chamber 6 and with a discharge chamber 7 through valves 8, 9. The diaphragm 2 may be connected, by means of a rod 13 passing through a packing sleeve 14, to a second diaphragm 2<1>, the upper side of which communicates with the suction and discharge chambers through valves 8<1>, 9<1>. The diaphragm 2<1> is acted on by a spring 16. In a modification, Fig. 6, both diaphragms are exposed to the operating fluid, which is moved by diaphragms 19, 19<1>. The latter may be operated mechanically, or by means of a handlever 23.
