The invention relates toimprovements in v pumps particularly for use inv dispensing fluid where an accurate measure is desired,
pump. v p
Other and further objects will appearv as the description matter proceeds, as illustrated by the drawing herewith, in. Which,
The ligure is a vertical section of one form of the pump. -1- is acrank to which i-s attached a pinion ,-2- which meshes Awith a rack -3- connected Vby ua piston rod to a valve cage -5-', threaded on a bushing' -6- constitutingl the clamping means to 'Y hold two piston cups -7-7- in proper'rela- 1 tionship to form the piston"'-.8-. Alball `-9- is encased in the cage, and is limited in its upward movement by a pin -19- extending through said cage,'and the cage has openings -18- therein for the iiow of the fluid.
n A packing tube --11-' is disposed within ,35, thecylinder and has its upper end threaded into the head -12- which is threaded onv the upper end of the cylinder, and a cap -10- is threaded on the-.lower end of jsaid tube -1l-. The piston rod isrslidabl'e through I 49 saidcap to be guided thereby, and saidrcap has'a packing vgland e20- tov prevent leakage. The tube -11- is used to prevent the" leakage ofr fluid around the' pistonv rod `through the cylinder head 1-`-`12-.
15- is seatable. Said check valve is limited in its unseating movement by a pin -17- extending across the discharge nozzle The cylinder head -12- has van outlet spout 14- on which va ball check-valve f vThe operation of my invention is substantially as follows: The crank.-1-- is turned to operate the pinion 2--' and rack 3- for actuating the piston rod 4- to exert pulling or pushing action on cage -5- and vpiston -8- up or down during the pumping movement. When the piston -8-'- is forced downwardly the check valve -9+ is raisedby the suction created within cylinder -l3-, thus drawing the fluid into the same.
Vlfhen the piston is actuated in the opposite direction, or upwardly, check valve -9- is immediately closed. Y
The check valve -'-9- closes instantly by its own weight without the movement of the piston -8- within the cylinder `-l3. v As the piston travels upwardly the check valve -`15 is moved upwardly by the fluid which is forced from the cylinder -13- through the outlet nozzle -l6-. The checkl valve -l5 is immediately closed Yby gravity l whenever the operation of the pump ceases.
The piston cups -7-7- are formed preferably of two stampings with the peripheral l edgetapered to a feather edge. The cups -7-r-7-fare preferablyof brass or copper,
or a softer -metal in relation to a cylinder of harder metal such as steel or iron, into which said cupsrare forced under compression. The piston cups--7-7-- being`.005 larger than ythediameter ofthe cylinder -l3, and being lof flexible material andy form, the peripheral edges are constantly expanded by fluid pressure against the inside of each cup duringtheir operation within the cylinder.
V vHaving described my invention and Vthe f operation thereof, I claim:
Apiston comprising a pair of soft metal cups disposed back to back and having rims extending laway from one another tobe comc pressed within a cylinder, -a bushingextendf ing through said cupsa valve cage threaded 'on said bushing and clamping said cups, and
ga' valve seatable on said bushing withinV said cage.;A v Y In testimony whereof, I have signed my name lto this specification. v
JESSE D. LANGDON.
