Abstract
516,745. Valve amplifying circuits. SNEATH, O. B. July 6, 1938, No. 20042. [Class 40 (v)] In an audio-frequency amplifier, a rectifier in the grid circuit is arranged to reduce, as the signal becomes weaker, the biasing-voltage, and so economize in anode current. In Fig. 4, the cathode load, which may be a resistance or the normal output load, is connected across A, B. The grid is negatively biased by the cathode load so that only a small anode current flows, but when a signal is applied the rectifier N produces a voltage which reduces the bias to a normal working value. In modifications, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the output load may be connected in the anode circuit, or in series with a variable resistance in the cathode circuit. A voltage from the cathode load may provide either negative feed-back, or by rectification an automatic-volume-control voltage. An automatic volume control voltage may be obtained as shown in Fig. 4 at Y from the potential divider R8, H9 and the smoothing circuit C3, R10, C4, the voltage of the H.T. negative with respect to cathode and earth varying with the volume.
