[Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In an amplifier for a music-distributing system, the 'input circuit includes a potential divider consisting of fixed resistances 14, 7 and the anode-cathode space of a valve 11 which is adjusted in accordance with the output current so that when the latter decreases, because of a reduction of the number of listeners and consequent increase in the impedance of the load, the input to the amplifier decreases also. Preferably this effect is produced only when the impedance of the load is comparatively low. When it is high, the control voltage produced by the diode 12, which rectifies a portion of the output current, is neutralized by a valve 15 which shunts away the control voltage at each peak of signal current. When the input to the amplifier is reduced, its bias is increased by the alteration of the voltage drop in resistance 7 so as to reduce its anode dissipation. Modifications are described in which a preliminary amplifier uses the same anode supply as the valve 11, Fig. 3 (not shown), and in which the valve 11 is a variable-n pentode, Fig. 4 (not shown).
