Abstract

512,211. Treating charge; vaporizers. SCHWARZENBACH, E. Nov. 22, 1938, No. 34002. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1937. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In an engine using a heated mixture of oxygen and heavy oil either the whole or the greater part of the oxygen is supplied just before the mixture enters the engine cylinders and at least a part of the oxygen is in the form of ozonised air. In the apparatus shown a, rich mixture, produced in a carburetter 3, is passed through a chamber 6 heated either by the exhaust gases or in any suitable way and the greater part of the oxygen is contained in air supplied through a pipe 10 which joins the pipe for heated mixture just at the entrance to the engine induction pipe. The oxygen in the air is wholly or partly ozonised by electric sparks produced in the pipe 10. As shown by the dotted lines in the Figure the fuel tank 2 may be surrounded by an exhaust heater. In a modified arrangement, oil alone is drawn through one heater while air is drawn through another and passed to a pipe for the production of ozone and the heated air and ozone are added to the heated oil at the entrance to the engine induction pipe.
