Abstract

509,086. Oil engines. BUCHI, A. June 25, 1938, No. 18901. [Class 7 (iii)] A pre-combustion chamber 8 discharges into combustion spaces 22, 23 formed by depressions 24, 25 in the piston concentric with the inlet and exhaust valves. The depressions are so deep that the inlet and exhaust valves may be held open simultaneously while the piston is in its uppermost position during the scavenging stroke. Fuel is delivered into the chamber, by a pump driven from the cam-shaft. The fuel and burning mixture may be delivered through openings in the side or base of the chamber either as a fan-shaped jet or as jets 26, 27 which enter the spaces 22, 23 tangentially and set up rotary movements therein. Additional openings 36 deliver jets to the parts of the spaces near the chamber. In engines having two inlet and two exhaust valves in each cylinder, the chamber 8, Fig. 6, is disposed centrally and the openings 17 are arranged so that rotary movements in the same or opposite directions are created in the spaces beneath the valves. Alternatively, the chamber may have only two openings 17 which deliver common jets to each pair of spaces.
