507,962. Dynamo - electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and YOUNGMARK, F. A. March 31, 1938, No. 9873. [Class 35] A synchronous salient pole Alternating-current machine having a pole-face winding 5, to enable the machine to start as an induction motor, has one or more short-circuited coils 6 around a pole core 1 or root of a pole for reducing the alternating flux linking the exciting winding 4. As shown, the short-circuited coil is a metal sleeve embracing the pole core throughout its length or, in order to avoid a reduction in winding space, it may consist of a metal collar embracing the root of the pole and let into the yoke 2. The invention is applicable mainly to machines in which the magnetic circuit is wholly laminated and in which the starting winding is polyphase wound.
