Machine's with two or more armatures; rotary transformers; windings; commutators.-A continuous-current generator, motor, or transformer has at least two separate stationary armature windings carried by axially displaced stator parts, a number of separate commutators corresponding to the number of armature windings and connected thereto, and a rotary field member comprising axially displaced north and south poles. Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a machine which can operate as a generator or motor. One stator member A carries an open coil winding with coils 1 - - 4 connected in series to conductors which connect opposite segments e', g<1> and f<1>, h' of the left-hand half of the commutator C. An axially displaced stator part B carries similar coils connected to the right-hand half of the commutator, the poles of the stator members being relatively displaced by an angle of 45‹. Brushes i, i<1> on the commutator halves are connected together and current is led into or from the commutator by brushes k, k<1>. The rotating magnet may comprise a core 11, Fig. 2, carried by a non-magnetic shaft 10 and having a north pole 13 at one end, co-operating with stationary armature cores 15 and windings 16, and a south pole at the other end co-operating with similar cores and windings. The maget poles are preferably laminated. The exciting coil 12 may be fixed or it may rotate, or a permanent magnet may be employed. The pole surface of a rotor core is preferably equal to the sum of a stator pole surface and the surface between two stator poles, and may be shaped as shown in Fig. 5 or it may have other shapes provided that the greatest length' y is greater than the sum of the lengths of a stator pole m and interpolar gap o. Regulation may be effected by varying the connections of the armature windings, and the field winding may be excited in shunt, series or separately. In the case of a motor, speed regulation may be effected automatically. Fig. 6 shows the connections for a transformer. This is similar to the arrangement described in connection with Fig. 1, but a separate system of windings 1<1> - - 4<1> is provided on each stator half A, B and these windings are connected to a separate commutator C'. The primary and secondary windings may be combined and provided with tappings to vary the transformation ratio of the machine. Specifications 323,549, 323,550, 323,551 are referred to.
