Machines with two or more armatures; rotary transformers; commutators. - A continuouscurrent generator, motor, or transformer with at least two separate stationary armature windings carried by axially displaced stator parts and a rotary field member comprising. axially displaced north and south poles of the type described in Specification 323,498 is provided with a commutating device comprising slip-rings and commutator segments. Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a machine which can operate as a generator or motor. One stator member A carries coils 1 - - 4 connected in series and connected to conductors which connect opposite segments e', g<1> and f<1>, h<1> of the left-hand half of the commutator C and the coils of the other stator part B are similarly connected to the right-hand half of the commutator. Brushes i, i' on the commutator halves are connected together and current is led into or from the commutator by brushes k, k'. The arrangement of the commutating device is shown in Fig. 3 in an auxiliary casing wherein 54 and 55 indicate the commutator halves of Fig. 2; 50, 51 and 52, 53 indicate two pairs of slip-rings, the former being connected to the segments e<1>, g<1>, h<1>, f<1> and the latter to the segments e, g, f, h, Fig. 1. The armature windings 16 are connected to brushes (not shown) which bear on the rings 50 - - 53. The commutator may work in air or in vacuo or in a gas other than air at atmospheric or at a higher or lower pressure, or it may work in a liquid such as oil. If the machine has three poles for each half of the stator instead of four, as shown, three commutators are employed. The Specification also describes the arrangement of double commutators, each comprising two rings of four segments, used in a continuous-current transformer as described in Specification 323,498.
