Abstract

<PICT:0496566/III/1> <PICT:0496566/III/2> A gas-detector comprising an electrically heated surface E on which inflammable gas burns and means for indicating the resulting rise in temperature includes a time switch H which switches on the electric heating intermittently for comparatively short periods. The device may be embodied in a miner's electric lamp and the indication given by extinguishing the lamp C. This may be effected by inserting in the lamp circuit an L-shaped bi-metallic strip M, one limb of which is exposed to the heat produced on the test surface E, while the other limb compensates for changes in atmospheric temperature. The concentration of inflammable gas may be estimated by comparing the illumination of the filament E with that of a lamp F which is calibrated by means of a resistance K, the two filaments being mounted on opposite sides of an opaque partition and viewed through opal glass. For this purpose the filaments may be illuminated independently of the time switch by means of a switch H1. The testing device is separated from the atmosphere by double gauzes G, G1.
