Abstract

<PICT:0411959/III/1> <PICT:0411959/III/2> In a gas detector for use in mines, &c., two lamps of different capacities are connected in series, the capacities being such that one lamp only glows, and a switch, controlled by a diaphragm, is provided to short-circuit this lamp to allow the other to be illuminated. As shown in the Figures the lamps 5 and 6 are connected in series and the lamp 5 glows. The diaphragm 24 connected to the pot 28 normally holds switch 22, 23 open but when the gas reaches a predetermined composition the diaphragm collapses sufficiently to allow 22, 23 to close a short circuit across 5 so that lamp 5 is extinquished and lamp 6 is illuminated.
