Abstract

298,767. Thornton, W. M. Oct. 11, 1927. Gas analysis. - A miners' electric lamp has two filament, one sealed in air and serving as a lamp, the other exposed to the atmosphere, and a variable resistance adjustable by relative movement of two parts of the lamp casing is used to bring the two filaments to equal luminosity, thereby indicating the percentage of inflammable gas present. In the illustrated modification the resistance is mounted on the under side of the cap C and is connected in series with the lamp DI. One terminal BI of the battery is connected to the lamp and to the filament F through the central contact H; the other terminal contacts at B4, B3 with the resistance and with a contact D3 connected to the filament, the amount of resisance being varied by rotating the cap. The filament circuit is broken when the terminal B3 makes contact with D2. In a modification the lamp and filament are in series with one another and the resistance is shunted across the former.
