Abstract
<PICT:0477338/III/1> <PICT:0477338/III/2> In apparatus for the detection and estimation of inflammable gases or vapours having a thermally-operated switch, e.g. a bi-metallic switch, designed to operate at a heating effect corresponding to a given percentage of combustible gas, the switch is automatically adjusted to compensate for oxygen deficiency or variations in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. For example, the thermal switch may be a bi-metallic diaphragm 1 arranged over the flame or burner 12, and operating a warning lamp 13. Connection between the inner side of the diaphragm and the atmosphere is made via pipe 4, through a vessel 5 containing an absorbent for carbon dioxide, so that on increase in the carbon dioxide content, or decrease in oxygen, an increased vacuum is applied to the diaphragm bringing contacts 2 and 3 closer together, so that the switch will be operated by the less heat generated in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere when the predetermined content of combustible gas is attained. Initial adjustments are made by adjusting the contact 3 by screw 11. By applying a vacuum through branch pipe 8, the accuracy of the warning device may be tested. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, one contact 22 is carried by a bi-metallic strip 21, the other contact being carried by a hollow diaphragm 24 which collapses as before bringing the contacts closer together.
