Abstract

<PICT:0402011/III/1> A combustible gas detector comprises a conduit 1 containing a catalyst 11 and a differential thermometer 4 of which one bulb 7<1> is situated in the conduit in advance of the catalyst and the other bulb 8 is placed within the catalyst or in the conduit beyond it. The bulbs 7<1>, 8 contain a multi-phase system capable of generating a considerable differential pressure in response to small variations in temperature due to the oxidation of combustible gases. The system may consist of (1) a volatile liquid e.g. ether and its vapour, (2) a liquid holding a gas in solution, or (3) a gas adsorbed in a substance such as active charcoal or silica gel. The bend 7 of the U-tube contains a liquid such as mercury, the movement of which may complete an electric circuit and operate a signalling or like device.
