Abstract

A device for detecting mercury vapour comprises a source of monochromatic radiation 9 situated between two similar absorption chambers 7, 10, one of which is traversed by the gas to be tested the other being provided with a diaphragm 11 for calibration purposes. Two photo electric cells 26, 27 exposed to the radiation traversing the absorption chambers are connected in a balanced circuit to which is connected a two-stage thermionic amplifier 29 actuating an indicator 30. The amount of mercury vapour present in the chamber 7 may be indicated by calibration of the indicator 30 and/or of the diaphragm 11. The photoelectric cells preferably have sodium cathodes. The source of radiation 9 comprises a cylindrical <PICT:0405937/III/1> resonance lamp 20 containing mercury vapour which is excited by a mercury vapour lamp 14 of circular form surrounding the chamber 20.
